The King of The King, It's Blues Boy King!

Riley B. King

His reign as King of the Blues has been as long as that of any monarch on earth. Yet B.B. King continues to wear his crown well. At age 76, he is still light on his feet, singing and playing the blues with relentless passion. Time has no apparent effect on B.B., other than to make him more popular, more cherished, more relevant than ever. Don't look for him in some kind of semi-retirement; look for him out on the road, playing for people, popping up in a myriad of T.V. commercials, or laying down tracks for his next album. B.B. King is as alive as the music he plays, and a grateful world can't get enough of him.

For more than half a century, Riley B. King - better known as B.B. King - has defined the blues for a worldwide audience. Since he started recording in the 1940s, he has released over fifty albums, many of them classics. He was born September 16, 1925, on a plantation in Itta Bena, Mississippi, near Indianola. In his youth, he played on street corners for dimes, and would sometimes play in as many as four towns a night. In 1947, he hitchhiked to Memphis, TN, to pursue his music career. Memphis was where every important musician of the South gravitated, and which supported a large musical community where every style of African American music could be found. B.B. stayed with his cousin Bukka White, one of the most celebrated blues performers of his time, who schooled B.B. further in the art of the blues.

B.B.'s first big break came in 1948 when he performed on Sonny Boy Williamson's radio program on KWEM out of West Memphis. This led to steady engagements at the Sixteenth Avenue Grill in West Memphis, and later to a ten-minute spot on black-staffed and managed Memphis radio station WDIA. "King's Spot," became so popular, it was expanded and became the "Sepia Swing Club." Soon B.B. needed a catchy radio name. What started out as Beale Street Blues Boy was shortened to Blues Boy King, and eventually B.B. King.

In the mid-1950s, while B.B. was performing at a dance in Twist, Arkansas, a few fans became unruly. Two men got into a fight and knocked over a kerosene stove, setting fire to the hall. B.B. raced outdoors to safety with everyone else, then realized that he left his beloved $30 acoustic guitar inside, so he rushed back inside the burning building to retrieve it, narrowly escaping death. When he later found out that the fight had been over a woman named Lucille, he decided to give the name to his guitar to remind him never to do a crazy thing like fight over a woman. Ever since, each one of B.B.'s trademark Gibson guitars has been called Lucille.

Soon after his number one hit, "Three O'Clock Blues," B.B. began touring nationally. In 1956, B.B. and his band played an astonishing 342 one-night stands. From the chitlin circuit with its small-town cafes, juke joints, and country dance halls to rock palaces, symphony concert halls, universities, resort hotels and amphitheaters, nationally and internationally, B.B. has become the most renowned blues musician of the past 40 years.

Over the years, B.B. has developed one of the world's most identifiable guitar styles. He borrowed from Blind Lemon Jefferson, T-Bone Walker and others, integrating his precise and complex vocal-like string bends and his left hand vibrato, both of which have become indispensable components of rock guitarist's vocabulary. His economy, his every-note-counts phrasing, has been a model for thousands of players, from Eric Clapton and George Harrison to Jeff Beck. B.B. has mixed traditional blues, jazz, swing, mainstream pop and jump into a unique sound. In B.B.'s words, "When I sing, I play in my mind; the minute I stop singing orally, I start to sing by playing Lucille."

In 1968, B.B. played at the Newport Folk Festival and at Bill Graham's Fillmore West on bills with the hottest contemporary rock artists of the day who idolized B.B. and helped to introduce him to a young white audience. In ``69, B.B. was chosen by the Rolling Stones to open 18 American concerts for them; Ike and Tina Turner also played on 18 shows.

B.B. was inducted into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame in 1984 and into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. He received NARAS' Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award in 1987, and has received honorary doctorates from Tougaloo(MS) College in 1973; Yale University in 1977; Berklee College of Music in 1982; Rhodes College of Memphis in 1990; Mississippi Valley State University in 2002 and Brown University in 2007. In 1992, he received the National Award of Distinction from the University of Mississippi.

In 1991, B.B. King's Blues Club opened on Beale Street in Memphis, and in 1994, a second club was launched at Universal CityWalk in Los Angeles. A third club in New York City's Times Square opened in June 2000 and most recently two clubs opened at Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut in January 2002. In 1996, the CD-Rom On The Road With B.B. King: An Interactive Autobiography was released to rave reviews. Also in 1996, B.B.'s autobiography, "Blues All Around Me" (written with David Ritz for Avon Books) was published. In a similar vein, Doubleday published "The Arrival of B.B. King" by Charles Sawyer, in 1980.

B.B. continues to tour extensively, averaging over 250 concerts per year around the world. Classics such as "Payin' The Cost To Be The Boss," "The Thrill Is Gone," How Blue Can You Get," "Everyday I Have The Blues," and "Why I Sing The Blues" are concert (and fan) staples. Over the years, the Grammy Award-winner has had two #1 R&B hits, 1951's "Three O'Clock Blues," and 1952's "You Don't Know Me," and four #2 R&B hits, 1953's "Please Love Me," 1954's "You Upset Me Baby," 1960's "Sweet Sixteen, Part I," and 1966's "Don't Answer The Door, Part I." B.B.'s most popular crossover hit, 1970's "The Thrill Is Gone," went to #15 pop.

Jazz Up Your Guitar!

JAZZ

First, jazz is important thing/genre for musician, if you can play jazz you can play anything, find as many jazz song as you can get, listen to that song carefully, feel it in your heart, feel the beat, feel the tempo, feel the note, listen to that song, take what they play, and try to improvisation the song with your skill.

Second, you must know the basic chord for jazz, like Maj7, m7, Dom7, Maj, min, and also you must memorize the 12 major scales, and chord arpeggios, its really useful for playing jazz you know, you can't play anything, if you can't play the basic right?

Third, you must know the chord progression, like circle of fourth, circle of fifth, and the others, its really useful for making jazz songs, with chord progression you can made a nice song, or nice rhytem melodic.

Fourth, buy a songbook that have the chord, tone, and also the chord progression, it will help you to play the song, play with low tempo, then try a mid tempo, and try a fast tempo if you can:P

Fifth, find a software for computer that contains the tone, and the chords sounds, and try to improvise the song with yourself, try the scales, the arpeggios, the chords, and the others.

Sixth, learn Chord inversion, Pentatonic scales of your favourites chords, blues scales, melodic minor scales, harmonic minor scales, minor scales, major scales, and the modes.

Seventh, made a jazz band! you couldn't go forward if there is no friend to ask right? ask many people about the teoric, and practice.

Good luck for the exercise!!!, remember, practice not make perfect, PRACTICE MAKES PERMANENT!!!

Rhythm Player!

Rhythm Section

Tip 1.

Volume down.

A good idea for playing rhythm section is to set you guitar volume down, why? because rhythm only for accompanist, so if you set your volume too high, the audience will be disturb by your volume, also the lead isn't sound, so it's really important to keep your volume down.

Tip 2.

Dynamic.

Develop your dynamic range by using a heavy gauge guitar pick for thick sound, using mid gauge guitar pick for middle sound, using low gauge guitar pick for thin sound. The dynamic range is created by holding the pick lightly for your soft tones, and gripping your pick firmly for the loud tones. A good exercise is to tremolo pick while counting as follows, you should reach your loudest dynamic at the number 9 Example:

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1

softest=>loudest=>softest.

the difficult part is as you bring the dynamic back down to soft after you playing loud, this is why you need a control from your finger.

Tip 3.

Ground Beat.

Always make sure your foot is tapping, to counting the tempo, this will make you aware of the groove. you can do amazing things rhythmicallyif you tap your foot. This one of the more basic, yet often overlooked aspects of guitar playing. Bya developing and exploring your guitar skills, you can playing a more groove on your rhythm, feel the groove to, the important point to be a good rhythmist is, how deep you can feel the groove, as deep as you can, as good as you can play. So i explain this for you, keep exercise!

Good Luck!!!

Rock Out!!!

ROCK

First, you must know rock songs, try to find as many you can rock song, and try to listen to that song, listen the riff, the lead, the rhythm, and the beat.

Second, you must know the basic rock progression, rock is similar with blues, rock have the same basic progression like 12 bar blues, at How To Play Blues, strum your guitar, and try to counting one, two, three, every chord that you played, because its really important to keep the tempo, try to not out of tempo, if you out of tempo, try to back to the first tempo, it will help you.

Third, basic rock riff, pressing down on fourth fret of your guitar, and then release it quickly while fingering the A Major Chord in bar position, with your left index finger, holding the first, second, third, and fourth strings on your guitar, this is called hammering the bass.

Fourth, learn the power chords, power chords really useful in rock, a famous band like AC/DC, Nirvana, Rolling Stones, its often to using power chords, like A5, D5, E 5, and many more, only with two grips you can make a really rock or metal sound with power chords, so learn the power chords.

Fifth, try to make a song with the chords, the progression chords, and the rock riff, make a good song with the lyric too.

final word, keep exercise, fingering exercise, teoric exercise, and the practice of course.

Good Luck!!!

Blues Learning!

First, we gonna learn for how to play blues, why blues?, because blues is the root of all music, so if you can play blues you can play anything:D. It's important thing to play blues, you must get the soul, if you played blues with out your soul, the tone wouldn't out perfectly, so the audience can't catch what you play!
Basic blues is 12 bar blues, the formula is:

Basic 12 Bar Blues:

|I7...|I7...|I7...|I7...|
|IV7...|IV7...|I7...|I7...|
|V7...|IV7...|I7...|V7...|

play that blues well, and next phase is, scale on blues, with this scale you can play a blue note, a special note with blues sound or 3rd flat note.

here is the scale

Pentatonic scale : note 1-2-3-5-6 on gamut.

Blues scale : 1-b3-4-b5-5-b7-8 on gamut

two scales above, is always played on blues, so you must explores the scales and chord for blues. Blues usually played with dominant 7 chord, it's really have taste for blues you know. when people start playing blues, the soul will appear, it doesn't matter your blues skill is jerk, blues talking about soul, not the skill.

Soul number 1, skill number 2.

so and so much about blues that you must explore by yourself.

Faiz Ibadurahman

I was born at 30 august 1993, at Jakarta Indonesia. you know i have an ordinary life, like the common people, school, course, study, playing, you know i really love my guitar, and my guitar love me too :P, you know first time i played guitar, i was 13 years old, it's kinda old enough you know. but from a classic guitar course, month by month, years by years, i've been good enough for playing guitar.

First time i was love metal music, hardrock, thrash metal, and many more, it's really nice to hear some distortion, sweeping, shredding, and i love the sound too, but i think, i can't be a shredder, you know, it's really hard to play, and my heart not desire to play it, so, years by years, finally i found a music genre that i loved full of my heart, the genre is BLUES. why i can love it? because my father played it repeatedly in the car, so i get addicted by a vintage sound, slow beat from the blues, heavy vocal, and i can feel it too.

Day after day, i listen to the blues music repeatedly, from Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimi Hendrix, B.B King, Eric Clapton, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, John Mayer, Lance Lopez, Robben Ford, Dereck Truck, Albert King, Freddie King, John Lee Hoker, Buddy Guy, Blues Brothers, Robert Johnson, Rory Gallagher, and many more. every bluesman has specialty, honestly i love Jimi Hendrix for his vintage sound, John Mayer for the song composition, Kenny Wayne Shepherd for the blues riff, Stevie Ray Vaughan for the texas blues, B.B King for his slow tone, and Eric Clapton for his slow hand:D.

This day i try to be a great soulful bluesman. Hopefully i can be one among them. i really wanna be bluesman you know, it's really nice to play blues with your full heart and of course the soul.

Stevie Ray Vaughan

Stevie Ray Vaughan

Texas "Flood" Bluesman

  • Born: 3 October 1954
  • Birthplace: Dallas, Texas
  • Died: 27 August 1990 (Helicopter crash)
  • Best Known As: Lead singer and guitarist for the band Double Trouble
Stevie Ray Vaughan learned to play the guitar as a kid, influenced by his older brother, guitarist Jimmie Vaughan. By 1972 Stevie had dropped out of school and was playing blues guitar in bands in Austin, Texas. In 1981 he named his band Double Trouble, and in 1982 caught the attention of David Bowie, who in 1982 asked him to play on the hit "Let's Dance." In 1983 Vaughan released his debut album, Texas Flood, and the following year he released Couldn't Stand the Weather, a commercial and critical success. He continued to tour and record, playing a mix of electric blues, country and rock, until his death in a 1990 helicopter crash.

With his astonishingly accomplished guitar playing, Stevie Ray Vaughan ignited the blues revival of the '80s. Vaughan drew equally from bluesmen like Albert King, Otis Rush, and Muddy Waters and rock & roll players like Jimi Hendrix and Lonnie Mack, as well as the stray jazz guitarist like Kenny Burrell, developing a uniquely eclectic and fiery style that sounded like no other guitarist, regardless of genre. Vaughan bridged the gap between blues and rock like no other artist had since the late '60s. For the next seven years, Stevie Ray was the leading light in American blues, consistently selling out concerts while his albums regularly went gold. His tragic death in 1990 only emphasized his influence in blues and American rock & roll.

Born and raised in Dallas, Vaughan began playing guitar as a child, inspired by older brother Jimmie. When he was in junior high school, he began playing in a number of garage bands, which occasionally landed gigs in local nightclubs. By the time he was 17, he had dropped out of high school to concentrate on playing music. Vaughan's first real band was the Cobras, who played clubs and bars in Austin during the mid-'70s. Following that group's demise, he formed Triple Threat in 1975. Triple Threat also featured bassist Jackie Newhouse, drummer Chris Layton, and vocalist Lou Ann Barton. After a few years of playing Texas bars and clubs, Barton left the band in 1978. The group decided to continue performing under the name Double Trouble, which was inspired by the Otis Rush song of the same name; Vaughan became the band's lead singer.

For the next few years, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble played the Austin area, becoming one of the most popular bands in Texas. In 1982, the band played the Montreux Festival and their performance caught the attention of David Bowie and Jackson Browne. After Double Trouble's performance, Bowie asked Vaughan to play on his forthcoming album, while Browne offered the group free recording time at his Los Angeles studio, Downtown; both offers were accepted. Stevie Ray laid down the lead guitar tracks for what became Bowie's Let's Dance album in late 1982. Shortly afterward, John Hammond, Sr. landed Vaughan and Double Trouble a record contract with Epic, and the band recorded its debut album in less than a week at Downtown.

Vaughan's debut album, Texas Flood, was released in the summer of 1983, a few months after Bowie's Let's Dance appeared. On its own, Let's Dance earned Vaughan quite a bit of attention, but Texas Flood was a blockbuster blues success; receiving positive reviews in both blues and rock publications, reaching number 38 on the charts, and crossing over to album rock radio stations. Bowie offered Vaughan the lead guitarist role for his 1983 stadium tour, but he turned him down, preferring to play with Double Trouble. Vaughan and Double Trouble set off on a successful tour and quickly recorded their second album, Couldn't Stand the Weather, which was released in May of 1984. The album was more successful than its predecessor, reaching number 31 on the charts; by the end of 1985, the album went gold. Double Trouble added keyboardist Reese Wynans in 1985, before they recorded their third album, Soul to Soul. The record was released in August 1985 and was also quite successful, reaching number 34 on the charts.

Although his professional career was soaring, Vaughan was sinking deep into alcoholism and drug addiction. Despite his declining health, Vaughan continued to push himself, releasing the double live album Live Alive in October of 1986 and launching an extensive American tour in early 1987. Following the tour, Vaughan checked into a rehabilitation clinic. The guitarist's time in rehab was kept fairly quiet, and for the next year Stevie Ray and Double Trouble were fairly inactive. Vaughan performed a number of concerts in 1988, including a headlining gig at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, and wrote his fourth album. The resulting record, In Step, appeared in June of 1989 and became his most successful album, peaking at number 33 on the charts, earning a Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Recording, and going gold just over six months after its release.

In the spring of 1990, Stevie Ray recorded an album with his brother Jimmie, which was scheduled for release in the fall of the year. In the late summer of 1990, Vaughan and Double Trouble set out on an American headlining tour. On August 26, 1990, their East Troy, WI, gig concluded with an encore jam featuring guitarists Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy, Jimmie Vaughan, and Robert Cray. After the concert, Stevie Ray boarded a helicopter bound for Chicago. Minutes after its 12:30 a.m. takeoff, the helicopter crashed, killing Vaughan and the other four passengers. He was only 35 years old.

Family Style, Stevie Ray's duet album with Jimmie, appeared in October and entered the charts at number seven. Family Style began a series of posthumous releases that were as popular as the albums Vaughan released during his lifetime. The Sky Is Crying, a collection of studio outtakes compiled by Jimmie, was released in October of 1991; it entered the charts at number ten and went platinum three months after its release. In the Beginning, a recording of a Double Trouble concert in 1980, was released in the fall of 1992 and the compilation Greatest Hits was released in 1995. In 1999, Vaughan's original albums were remastered and reissued, with The Real Deal: Greatest Hits, Vol. 2 also appearing that year. 2000 saw the release of the four-disc box SRV, which concentrated heavily on outtakes, live performances, and rarities. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

Janis Joplin

JANIS JOPLIN

Blow My Blues Away (No Label, 9 CD)

For beginners, the three-CD Janis compilation (1993) offered a handy overview of the singer and her career and, for the fans, the set included outtakes and unreleased tracks to make the purchase worthwhile.

But Janis diehard fans have also been rallying around the nine-CD fan compilation, Blow All My Blues Away, which includes full concert shows, more outtakes and more odds and ends.

Thanks then to goa for sharing the lossless tracks on the internet.

Notes from the set:

This set of archival recordings lets us witness the formation of arguably the most powerful and expressive voice in rock history. From the earliest known performances in the small bars of Texas to the first sessions with Big Brother to her mesmerizing live shows, Janis never left behind her raw roots. She drew upon them to impel emotional performances as if by exposing her pain she gained power over her past and transformed it into a gift. In these newly sourced pearls, we can hear as never before the birth and fast burning flame of Janis Joplin.

Included are outtakes and unreleased songs from the 1968 “Cheap Thrills” studio sessions, demos for the 1969 Kozmic Blues album and vast improvements on all existing vintage (1962-65) live recordings.

The vintage recordings, in particular, are wonderful and although we had some of this material from the long out of print “Janis” movie soundtrack vinyl release, this collection has 39 (!) tracks recorded between 1962-65 including the ubiquitous “Typewriter Tapes” made by Jorma. The fourth CD unchains the urgent expression and lets it be heard in a complete Big Brother concert from 1967.

Sit down by your window, put this set on, and blow all your blues away.

Various tracks compiled from best available sources. No additional info provided.
Special thanks to Tim Hughes for assembling Volumes 7, 8, 9.
Additional thanks to Mal Westcott.
Artwork by Ignatz.

However, over the years, some of the tracks on the Blow All My Blues Away set have officially seeped out though it is still a mine for the collector.

We will be sharing the entire set over the coming week. Where it is not certain if the track has been officially released, the particular track will not be shared. It will be shared if readers can confirm that the track has never been officially released.

The Real Indonesian Hendrix!

ASEP STONE

Asep Stone was born in Bandung, Indonesia.

He discovered a natural talent for the guitar and taught himself to play in a wide range of styles. He first performed at the age of 14 to an audience of nearly 20,000 people at the Bandung Gladiator Rocks Festival. He played extensively at venues in Indonesia and moved to the UK in 1993. He travelled all around the UK, performing original music with Stone Free. In 1999 Asep formed Purple Haze, who appeared on BBC Sessions and played with former Hendrix bass player Noel Redding at an auction of Jimi's guitars. Noel was keen to play with Asep again, but sadly died shortly after their meeting. Purple Haze toured the UK to great acclaim, but split up in 2004. In 2007 he moved to Switzerland where he formed Asep Stone Experience. He played various gigs around the country and started recording his own songs.
Asep went on to form The Experience with Tim and Daz who are based in Brighton and have been wowing audiences in various pubs and clubs around the city. They are now looking to play some larger venues.

Ways To Make Your Stratocaster Sound Like Jimi Hendrix.

If you have Fender Stratocaster, or Squire Stratocaster, but you wanted vintage sound like 50's-60's-70's Stratocaster, this is not impossible!!!.
First, you must modified the TONE CAPACITOR. Many of today Stratocaster using 0.022uF, 0.033uF, or 0.047uF capacitor size. Make no mistake.... capacitor is very influence for the tone, although you set the tone till full, it will remain influence.
50's and 60's Stratocaster using 0.1uF capacitor size, 70's using 0.05uF (0.047uF if not in 0.05uF size)
Second, GROUNDING.This day, potensio to potensio in grounding. Not use in old days, The more there is a lot of grounding, not going to be more pure tone. So if you want vintage sound don't be afraid of NOISE, some time noise can be postitive, for feedback, and guitar sustain too.
Also on the back of the existing body of, who had no ground wire connect to ground or to ground potensio input jack. Where it is up to who. only if you cares with detail and likeness years 1954-1963, the per-connect grounding cable to ground input jack, connect current 1964-to potensio.

that's all my tips and information, hopefully helpfull for you, who love VINTAGE SOUND :D

The First Bluesman of the Most Famous

ROBERT JOHNSON

Robert Leroy Johnson born on 8 May 1911 at Hazlehurst, Mississippi. Influenced by early blues pioneers such as Blind Lemon Jefferson, Son House, Lonnie Johnson. He influenced nearly all electric blues and rock players directly or indirectly, especially revolution electric blues at 1960s. Peter Green recording Robert Johnson Songbook at 1998, an album that explores the special cover version Robert Johnson song's.
Recording 32 song's in his life
(although there were rumors that there are songs that have not been found which is a sacred heritage for the blues player). Dissapeared for some time and finally reappeared as a better guitar player. Perhaps, he sold his soul to the devil as a reward for his brilliance grabbing the fretboard.
He died at 16 August 1938, almost certainly murdered. Some stories stated that he died because of being stabbed by a woman or a jealous husband, served with toxic whiskey, or like paying his debt to the devil.
He is a great bluesman but, he died in young age at 28 years old.....

KEEP THE BLUES ALIVE!

Preface

First, Every Guitarist Love Blues. Easy Grip, easy to play, but hard to feel it. Blues is a really cool way for look cool. Whether Robert Johnson sell his soul to the Devil for a super death metal guitar with the pointed tip?, or whether Jake and Elwood will be icons from generation to generation if they are called Jazz Fusion Brothers?

Blues is really easy if you know how to play the simple trick, but not for the soul, many people said blues is easy to play but hard to feel. Yes that's really right! You know, B.B King dont' know chords, he just singing with bending on the guitar. that proves blues is easy and simple, only with 1-2 tone, you can play blues, but you ain't play blues, if you ain't get the soul.

In the end, you can play blues if you get the soul, no problem if your skill suck or whatever, "Blues Ain't Talking About Skill, Blues Talking About Soul"
